phase out wordpress archive page in favor of archive.s.o
Closed, MigratedEdits Locked

Description

The archive page on wordpress and the webapp homepage are highly redundant. We want to merge the former into the latter.

In concrete terms:

  • the Archive label on the wordpress navigation bar should be made to point to archive.s.o
  • the growth graph should be integrated into the archive.s.o homepage
  • a call to action pointing to https://www.softwareheritage.org/support/ should be added from the archive.s.o homepage
  • www.s.o/support should be revamped to be less bare-bone
  • www.s.o/archive should be removed

To check the archive menu (and all of them) in other languages.

I have deployed a new version of https://archive.softwareheritage.org including the archive evolution graphs on the homepage.

Current draft of the WordPress website reorganization is available on the testbed instance: https://www-dev.softwareheritage.org (English only at the moment).

There is still some polishing and improvements to bring to them. Let's talk about it tomorrow or friday.

That's great, thanks !

One thing about the graphs/counters: we have now the graphs on archive.s.o, but we have lost some of the counters from before.

It would be nice to have both graphs and counters for all the type of objects in the DAG + origins. But of course it will be too much clutter to have it in the homepage. So, concrete proposal:

  • add a small link below the current 3 graphs like "more archive statistics…"
  • have that link point to a dedicated stats page with both graphs and counters for all object types

We only have counters history data for contents, revisions and origins (see history_counters.json).

Not sure if a dedicated statistics page is needed at the moment. I propose to add back the missing counters below the graphs instead.

Almost all points have been treated and deployed to production (see https://www.softwareheritage.org/).

Still remaining to do:

a call to action pointing to https://www.softwareheritage.org/support/ should be added from the archive.s.o homepage

Any idea on how you want the call to action link to look ?

Great!

As a minor comment, I propose to remove the submenu Archive > Browse. A submenu for one single item isn't particularly useful anyway, and we probably won't people to first go to archive.s.o anyway.

I think a simple button link reading "you can help" would do.

We do need the submenus, this will be clear in a couple of weeks
