It's not really related, because gitweb and cgit are two different things.

But it's true that for T1798 the Tor folks should let us know if they need gitweb, cgit, or both.

yes, they are different.
But it is related because of the site referenced in the description https://gitweb.torproject.org/ is a cgit instance and not a gitweb one (the name is a misnomer).
We must look at the source code of the page to see the cgit reference (v1.1).
(I should have said as much when i asked the question because i saw that prior to asking).

I think the description should be amended to present a real gitweb instance though (which i have no clue where they are at and i'm too lazy right now to look for one ;).

i wonder if this can be closed... was this ever implemented? and it's true that our gitweb is really a cgit instance... i wonder if *anyone* still runs gitweb with any significantly large number of repos, considering how much faster cgit is.
